US Resume Format: What American Employers Expect in 2026
American hiring is the most ATS-driven in the world — the majority of mid-size and large US employers screen applications through software before a recruiter opens one. That shapes every rule below: the US resume is short, plain, keyword-dense, and strips out the personal details that are normal almost everywhere else.

Name: Resume — never 'CV', which in the US means a long academic document
Length: One page under 10 years' experience; two pages is acceptable for senior roles

Personal details: No date of birth, marital status, nationality or gender. City and state only — no street address

United States resume questions
How long should a US resume be?
One page if you have under ten years of experience. Two pages is accepted for senior, executive or highly technical roles where the extra detail is genuinely load-bearing. Three pages is effectively never appropriate for a US resume outside academia and medicine.
Should I put my address on a US resume?
City and state only. A full street address is unnecessary, creates a privacy risk, and can trigger location bias if you live far from the office. If you are relocating, write 'Relocating to Austin, TX — August 2026'.
What is the difference between a resume and a CV in the US?
In America they are different documents. A resume is a one-to-two page marketing summary used for almost all jobs. A CV is a long, exhaustive academic record listing publications, grants, conference talks and teaching, used only for academia, research and some medical roles.
