A clear, modern guide to writing cover letters that get read, with templates and openings you can adapt for any role.
A cover letter is not your resume in paragraph form. It is a short, focused argument for why you in particular should get this job. The best ones are read in under 60 seconds and leave the reader wanting to talk to you.
Lead with something specific to the company — a product launch, a recent post by the team, a problem you have already thought about. 'I read your engineering blog post on scaling Postgres last month and immediately recognized the pattern from my work at...' is a much stronger start than 'I am applying for the Senior Engineer role'.
If the application clearly says 'optional', skip it unless you have a genuine and specific reason to write. A weak, generic cover letter is worse than no cover letter at all.
